So, you have decided you want to be a WAHM (Work at Home Mom), now what?

Well, there are alot of ways to go about making this dream come true for you.  There are also alot of scams out there.  Don't be pulled in to the get rich quick schemes.  I have yet to see a legitimate offer out there for one.  Usually they consist of one person getting rich - the one selling you the books and CD's on how to get rich.  The people buying them just lose money - the amount the seller takes for those books and CD's.  It is the same information that you can find for FREE online, so why line some scammers pocket with your hard earned money when you can just put it to good use for yourself.  I see newspaper ads for envelope stuffing and making crafts to resell back to the business.  Steer Clear!  I have never heard of one of these being legit.

To be a work at home mom, you will actually have to do some work.  A home business is just like anything else, you get out of it what you put into it.  If you are creative and love making your own items (like jewelry and crafts), you can market them online on your website or through an auction company like Ebay (which also has stores available).  If you prefer to join an already established business there are several Direct Sale Businesses out there you can join.  Most of them offer personal websites for their reps to sell from, wonderful support from the company and other reps, and terrific products to promote - most of which you probably have already heard about.  You can sell these items on your website, doing your business totally online, or you can have home-parties, online parties, fundraisers, and workshops.  There is a directory of available Direct Sale Businesses with basic information about each here on Moms All Stop, or you can do a google search to find others.

There are also tons of Work @ Home Business Ideas listed here.  When deciding what to do as a home business, keep some things in mind:

-Your passion about what you are making or selling.  If you love the product, your potential customers will notice that and be more inclined to do business with you.

-Your earnings potential.  What are you really going to earn from this?  What are your costs (start-up fees for craft projects, websites, starter kits, and so forth)?  If you are joining a direct sale business or working for a company doing home-based employment, what are the potential earnings (direct sale sales, commissions from downline members, rewards, cost per assignment done)?  How are these paid to you?  Paypal, check, direct deposit?  How often are you paid?  Weekly, monthly, on a net 30 basis (paid each month, but usually in the middle of the next month you earned the money from - example: you are paid for April's sales or projects on May 15th or 30th).

-Support.  What does the company offer in the way of support?  Do they have contact information readily available?  Do they have other reps you can talk to?  Do they have message boards for asking questions and looking up information?

The most important thing is to choose something that suits you.  Are you a loner or a people person, do you love working with your hands, or do you prefer a more "paperwork" type of job?

There are also companies out there for moms who have children in school during the day, but no real distractions during the school hours (like crying babies).  Most of these companies are looking for people to be "call centers" in thier homes.  People call into the company to ask questions, place orders and such and the company redirects the call to your home.  You are trained in how to answer the phone and questions properly.  These companies demand a quiet background from thier employees.  There are several companies listed here at WAHM.com.  Or you can be the person who does transcription work, if you are an accurate, fast typist (70 wpm or faster).  Here is a company that offers these kinds of jobs.

What ever you chose you need to understand that you will have to be organized, responsible and ready to work just like any other business.  The difference is that you can do these out of your home, so you are able to choose your own hours and be there for your families when they need you.

Good luck everyone!  I hope you are able to find what fits you the best.
