Mystery Shopping
Mystery Shopping is an interesting way to earn some extra money each month. It does not pay a ton of money, but if you do several shops a week, you can make several hundred dollars each month to help supplement your income. The best part of it is that you are probably already shopping in these stores. Why not make some money on the side for something you are already doing.
Basically, what it consists of is: Going to a business and letting the mystery shop companies know how the employees of those stores are handling the customers and products. The most important aspect of the job is to be totally unbias. Just state what is happening. Do not state your opinions. ALSO, never tell or admit to anyone that you are a mystery shopping - even if they confront you.
Some examples are:
1. Fast food restaurant - you most likely would be asked to time how long it takes to get an order while noting how many customers are in line and how many employees are working. You usually have to remember the employee's name or at least a description. You have to taste the food to see how it was prepared and presented. You observe how clean the restaurant looks and the bathrooms are.
2. Retail stores - normally you are asked to look for a particular piece of clothing, sale signs, and so forth. You see how many customers are in the store and how many employees. You ask some required questions to a sales associate and check to see how clean the dressing rooms are.
3. Also available are jobs that have you standing outside of stores and asking questions of people who are entering and exiting the stores. These are great if you have people skills.
4. Another aspect of the job could be setting up displays of products in the stores. You are given diagrams and told exactly how to do them.
5. A fun one for movie lovers is going to theaters and counting patrons, signage, movie times, and so forth.
If you are required to make a purchase, you will be told up front. You are usually reimbursed for purchases and/or allowed to keep them. You are also paid for doing the job. Normally you give your report online and/or mail/fax your receipts and papers to the company.
There are several companies out there. None of the legit ones require any fees to be paid. Do not pay a company to give you the names of companies that mystery shop. Volition has them listed for you alphabetically.
The watchdog for the mystery shopping companies is:
MSPA - the Mystery Shopping Providers Association.
They list all the legit ones. Go through them and see which ones suit you best and are in your area. Also join some of the mystery shopper boards to get advice on which companies are good from other mystery shoppers.
Important: Sign up with alot of the companies. Usually it is a first grab/ first get the job type of thing. The more companies you are signed up with, the better chance you have of getting the jobs.
Also note that most companies will give you only one job to start with. They want to be sure you do the job when you say you will and correctly. After you prove to them you are responsible, they will start emailing you with more and more job offers.
