Most of the companies require that you buy a starter kit from thier business so that you have items available to show your potential customers. Starter kits are usually a sampling of the items the company offers at a discounted price to help you get started. Some companies are completely free to join and do not require a starter kit to be purchased. These are in the minority and with these companies it is usually a good idea to purchase some of the product to show, so that you know what you are selling and can be confident in the product.

Some companies charge a monthly fee for an online store website, many offer you a free website to sell from when you join. If the company charges a fee for thier online store, it should be minimal. (Please note that I do not mean a monthly commitment of an autoship. Some companies are set up where you are automatically billed for a minimum amount each month - you receive product from the company for your payment. You may keep the product for yourself or sell it for a profit. It is usually a good deal. I, personally, am a representative of a couple of these company types. I love having product sent to me on a monthly basis, plus it's great knowing I'm getting a for-sure commission from my downline every month. If you join an autoship program, be sure to join one that has a product that you personally enjoy and that the company offers a multi-level commission frame. A large fee (with no product) is probably/usually a sign of a scam.

The most important thing to know is that companies promising you a certain amount of money monthly in direct sales are lying. They can say that their representatives make an average of so and so dollars, but like all businesses, it depends on what you put into it, for what you are going to get out of it. Be wary of empty promises of making a ton of money, BUT remain confident that you can earn good money by applying yourself and working towards reasonable goals.
